The echoes of the inauguration of The Sea Road mural in Torremuzza have barely faded, and the Halaesa-Nebrodi territory is already enriched by another important and evocative work of art: "Noi: Inizio di una nuova vita" (Us: Beginning of a New Life), by Antonino Lipari, known to all of us as Nino.

We are in Mistretta, within the majestic municipal park named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, and the artwork stands where, until recently, a magnificent Norway Spruce (Picea abies) once proudly stood. The cycle of life accustoms us to its fluctuating rhythm, where life precedes death, and death — sometimes — generates life. And so, after several centuries of silent and undisturbed existence, the fir tree became irreversibly diseased to the point that, to safeguard public safety, the city authorities decreed its removal about a year ago.

The community began to wonder how to fill the large void left by the impending demise of the majestic tree. While initiatives were being considered, the administrators decided to completely trim its crown, which was by then irreparably diseased, and to preserve the vast majority of its trunk, which was healthy enough to envision reusing the resulting timber.

An Unexpected Gift

Then, at a certain point, a young carpenter from Mistretta, Nino Lipari, knocked on the mayor's door. With his characteristic politeness, he suggested carving an artwork, a sculpture, from the remaining trunk: "I'll take care of everything," Nino said, "and I don't want to be paid."

It must be said that Nino is not new to the art of wood carving; in the past, through private commissions, he had already demonstrated artistic skills that transcend those of a simple, albeit very skilled, artisan. But now things became decidedly more serious, and he would have to put himself out there, exposing his work to public judgment. Yet Nino was confident; he knew what he was doing, had clear ideas, and possessed the skills to realize them. Thus, he immediately gained the mayor's trust, and work began just a few months after the tree's removal.

Access to the left avenue leading to the central square of the park was closed, opaque nets were put up, and simultaneously, the curiosity of passersby grew. They could barely glimpse scaffolding, the outline of the fir trunk, and Nino moving around it, but nothing more. The work lasted several months, and finally, on the evening of August 11th, the artwork was inaugurated, coinciding with the restoration of the lighting of the main gate of the municipal park.

"Noi": A Symbol of Love and Renewal

Noi blossomed at dusk on a pleasant August evening, contrasting with the sad days of the cutting of the majestic mother-plant that had held it in its womb for three centuries. In this journey that intertwines life with death, and allows death to generate life, Nino sensed the presence, in that trunk otherwise destined for the sadness of abandonment, oblivion, if not destruction, of an opportunity for rebirth and regeneration that could take shape through his hands, his tools, and his heart.

Nino then chose to embark on a reinterpretation of José Luis Santes's The Embrace and thus decided to celebrate his love for his land through the tender and eternal embrace between two lovers. It is a message so simple in its genuineness that, at times, we don't fully grasp its power. But Nino, with his artwork that he decided to give to the community, reminds us that giving oneself to others is also a form of love, that solidarity among people is an act of love, as is gratitude, and that one can become a father infinitely, just as he himself demonstrated by transforming a raw and shapeless piece of wood into a magnificent work of art that all of us can enjoy and through which we will have opportunities to reflect on the true meaning of life.

With these brief words, we extend a warm virtual hug to Nino, his family, and his collaborators, along with a sincere thank you for the significant gesture he performed.

Here's the English translation of the interview with Francesco Modica:

Francesco Saverio Modica, Francesco to everyone, is a young archaeologist from Mistretta and the son of Vincenzo, a highly decorated marathon runner of international renown. However, Francesco chose to run his personal marathon between archaeological digs, at a very special pace that alternates between the frenzy of unearthing a discovery of exceptional importance and the meticulous slowness inherent in the delicate work he has chosen to do.

I met Francesco during one of the most exciting moments of his brief but already intense experience as an archaeologist. We found ourselves in Tusa, at the site of Halaesa Arconidea, during one of the few breaks from the excavation that Francesco has been following with particular passion, still electrified by an exceptional discovery that we will discuss later.

A Passion for Archaeology and Early Discoveries

Francesco, in recent months it's been really difficult to talk to you calmly: your work as an archaeologist keeps you very busy, and I'd like to understand better why you chose this profession and the results you've achieved so far.

"My passion for archaeology goes way back. When I was four years old, I visited this place with my mother, and from then on, I never forgot it. My high school years in Mistretta further fueled this passion. In fact, after my studies, I spent many of my afternoons visiting the countryside surrounding the town, rich with ancient paths leading to special places. I often stumbled upon pottery shards, exposed structures, and ruined churches, which only fueled my imagination. This slowly transformed into a passion and a desire to delve deeper. I earned my master's degree in Archaeology three years ago and am now completing my PhD at the University of Palermo. Throughout my university journey, I continued to explore the territory, this time in Sicily, identifying lands and areas that could potentially host archaeological sites. My master's thesis, which builds on work done about twenty years ago by Professor Burgio, allowed me to update the mapping of areas of archaeological interest in the Aleso valley, increasing them from 155 to 245."

A Deep Connection to Halaesa Arconidea

It's no coincidence that we are meeting at Halaesa Arconidea, an archaeological site not far from your Mistretta. This is a special place for you, and I'd like to know what connects you to this territory: you are clearly going against the trend of so many of your peers who leave Sicily to work elsewhere.

"Fortunately, my work allows me to live in my homeland, and I've been frequenting Halaesa for ten years now. Imagine, I live only 500 meters away as the crow flies, so my connection to this place is truly deep and special. Living in the territory, I am aware of the beauties it holds but also of the difficulties and contradictions it presents. However, I find it 'natural' to live and stay here. I deeply love these places because I experience them every day, in all their facets. Here, I am fulfilling my adolescent dream: to excavate at Halaesa and restore the historical truth to this very important site."

The Founding of Halaesa and its Roman Alliance

Let's talk about Halaesa: in 403 BC, Archonides of Hèrbitas founded a settlement that would later become the city of Halaesa Arconidea. Who was Archonides, and what were the historical reasons that led him to leave Hèrbitas and move, with his people, to this distant corner of Sicily?

"We don't know much about the Archonides: most likely, the founder of Halaesa was Archonides II, grandson of Archonides I, who transferred a large group of Sicels from Hèrbitas to the northern coast of the island. After the Peloponnesian War, with the defeat of Athens and the victory of Syracuse allied with Sparta, Sicily experienced a moment of great confusion: Carthage took advantage of the conflict by attacking the southern coasts from Agrigento to Camarina, Himera was destroyed, and therefore many displaced people were forced to move elsewhere in search of calmer areas to settle.

Hèrbitas, presumably located in the mountains between Nicosia and Gangi, welcomed a very high number of civilians fleeing the destroyed cities. However, it soon became overpopulated, creating discontent among the inhabitants and forcing its lord to transfer part of the population to the lands north of Sicily. Halaesa was thus founded, which, however, experienced a difficult period in the first century since the Carthaginians, meanwhile, had pushed as far as the mouth of the Pollina river."

Halaesa thus became a very important center of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by the discoveries made so far: what do the remains of the ancient city tell us?

"At the beginning of the First Punic War, in 264 BC, Halaesa decided to ally with Rome; in fact, it was among the first to do so. This allowed it to free itself from the 'decima' of tributes, thus leaving the grain quota in the city that would otherwise have been destined for Rome. Up to the first century AD, Halaesa experienced its best period because it was able to invest a lot of money in public works such as the agora and the sacred temples. In short, the choice to ally with Rome from the outset proved to be decidedly winning."

A Remarkable Discovery: The Baths of Halaesa

Let's get to the present day and the news of the moment: the fifth excavation campaign conducted by the University of Palermo has, among other things, brought to light a thermal area of exceptional importance that further strengthens the idea that Halaesa Arconidea, all things considered, is still yet to be fully discovered.

"We estimate that the total surface area of the city extends over 15.5 hectares, but the state-owned area is smaller, so further land would need to be expropriated. It must also be said that almost all archaeological sites have only unearthed a part of the ancient cities, and it's the same for Halaesa; it would take decades of incessant excavations to unearth the entire site. Regarding the recent discovery, which adds to previous ones concerning the agora, the sanctuary, and the theater, we knew of the existence of a thermal complex, but we certainly couldn't have imagined unearthing such an extensive and important work. There is still much to excavate, but certainly, we are facing one of the largest thermal buildings in Sicily."

A Lifelong Commitment

Francesco, a final customary question: for how long will the attractive force of your land be able to keep you in our territory?

"I think forever: I don't want to leave."

Encouraging Data and Organic Growth

In parallel, very encouraging data is coming from the halaesanebrodi.it website, both in terms of access numbers and national and international distribution. I'd like to emphasize that these figures haven't been influenced by specific promotional campaigns, which are still planned. Instead, they are purely the result of spontaneous access, fueled by word-of-mouth and the quality and quantity of the published content.

Thanks to the meticulous work of promoting operators, events of tourist interest proposed by the municipalities, and highlighting our "ambassadors" – people who share our territory's story in Italy and worldwide – our website, with 35,000 accesses recorded in just a few months, has become the main showcase for Halaesa-Nebrodi's vitality.

The Path Forward: Vision, Sharing, and Perseverance

Over these ten months, we've launched and developed an innovative, exciting, forward-thinking, yet complex and challenging journey. After all, presenting oneself as a tourism destination is no simple matter: it requires vision and sharing, professionalism and perseverance, trust and patience, humility and courage. And love for one's territory and community.

Andrea Succi often says that the Culture of Hospitality doesn't equate to tourism, but it is its prerequisite. Therefore, it becomes crucial for each of us—whether an economic operator or a mayor—to change our approach to the world of tourism.

It's clear that our territory, our people, our tangible and intangible assets, and our culture deserve a chance for tourist, and thus economic, regeneration. This needs to come through a proposal that is relevant to our times, looks towards national and international markets, and is professionally structured and governed. These are topics that have been discussed for years, and now we can make them happen, but we must do it together.

The challenge is to replace the adversative conjunction "but" with the simpler and more reassuring copulative conjunction "and." This is neither easy nor guaranteed. The same goes for the adverb "together."

Today Mistretta experienced a truly emotional afternoon as the long-awaited official news arrived: it has been selected as one of the six finalist cities vying to become Italian Book Capital 2025. This achievement is truly exceptional, the result of a candidacy submitted on July 8th, following an excellent team effort involving intellectuals, administrators, associations, journalists, residents and non-resident Mistrettesi, as well as many citizens.

On the 29th of this month, the six selected cities (out of twenty competing cities) will be called upon to present their project to the jury via video conference. The chosen project will then immediately go to the table of the Minister of Culture, Giuli, for final ratification. One year ago, on August 9th, we lost Mario Portera, a well-known and respected doctor from Mistretta. For over twenty years, he served as a director at              the  SS. Salvatore Hospital, deeply devoted to his family, but also to his passions. Mario always had a great focus on social causes, which he expressed in                various ways: unforgettable was the first edition of the "Dama Vivente" (Living Checkers), strongly desired and organized by him and other friends, stemming          from his passion for checkers that led him to establish, along with other enthusiasts, the "Tommaso Aversa" Checkers Club of Mistretta.

1. Another great passion that Mario pursued and "cultivated" was good food (he was also a passionate cook) and, especially, olive oil, which he cultivated on his family's farm. In one of our last meetings, Mario enthusiastically told me that he was close to obtaining an important certification: that of a European Olive Oil Taster, which he achieved a few weeks later in Imperia, at ONAOO.

   I saw that same excited look in what turned out to be our last encounter: we met in the Mother Church, he was with his wife Gabriella, and as we left the church, he told me that together they were completing a significant project very dear to them, related to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli where we were. I was happy and we agreed that, once everything was completed, I would gladly welcome and promote it on the Halaesa-Nebrodi website.

   Unfortunately, a few weeks later, Mario passed away, but his hard work didn't. I'll let Gabriella Dongarrà tell the rest, as she kindly sent a letter to the editorial staff.

   The website originated from an idea by the Archpriest, Monsignor Michele Giordano, who has worked tirelessly in our community for over 30 years and was the main architect of the Church's elevation to a Sanctuary. The Archpriest decided to involve my husband and me in this project, leveraging our IT, website creation, and management skills. For several years, we've created and managed a website focused on nutrition, with a particular emphasis on infant nutrition: https://www.pappablog.it/

   Both my husband and I enthusiastically embraced the idea. Unfortunately, life's circumstances forced me to carry this project forward alone. I'm trying my best.

   Today, the website is online. Its mission is to make the Sanctuary known to the faithful living far from Mistretta, but also to art lovers, because the Sanctuary is a treasure trove of invaluable and beautiful artworks. After an online visit, the next step is an in-person visit to the Church and our charming town.

   I wanted to point out that our Sanctuary is a place of Pious visit to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence. You can find all the relevant information on the website.

   Next Step: we're working on creating QR codes to be placed along the Sanctuary's visitor route. By scanning them with a mobile phone, visitors will connect to sections of the website and can discover the artworks in front of them. It's a kind of completely free guided tour that everyone can manage according to their own time and preferences.

   Feedback is welcome as it can help us improve and make the site lively and engaging, a beating heart of the community of Mistretta and beyond."

Mistretta is solidifying its position as a significant cultural hub in the Nebrodi region. Following its successful inaugural edition in 2024, the event titled "Amastra che legge in festa 2025, the Festival of Books and Reading" is making its return.

With the patronage of the Municipality of Mistretta and the collaboration of numerous local associations and educational institutions, the event promises to strengthen the deep cultural sensitivity already demonstrated by the Amastratina community towards books and culture. This characteristic allowed Mistretta to compete as a finalist for Italian Book Capital 2025 through a project of great cultural, social, and identifying value, stemming from its recognition as a "Reading City" in 2024 by Cepell.

The book, therefore, takes center stage for an entire month rich in exhibitions, presentations, readings, educational workshops, and debates. Thus, within the framework of "May of Books," it will be interpreted not only as a tool for cultural dissemination but also for social cohesion and growth.

The festivities kick off on April 23rd with the exhibition "M'illumino leggendo" (I Light Up Reading), part of World Book and Copyright Day, organized by the I.C. Tusa-Mistretta at the Municipal Library. This will be followed by an interesting dialogue, entirely in Mistrettese dialect, titled "Mistretta, Identity and Narrative," featuring Corriere della Sera journalist Alessio Ribaudo and Vito Ribaudo, Human Resources Director of RCS. In the following days, various authors will be met, including Margherita Neri, Sara Magnoli, Tea Ranno, Mariangela Biffarella, Francesca Maccani, Mattia Corrente, and Massimiliano Città.

The initiative benefits from the valuable collaboration of the Pro Loco Mistretta APS Association, the Tusa-Mistretta Comprehensive Institute, the IIS A. Manzoni Mistretta, the Libreria Capitolo 18, the Hakuna Matata Association, the La Valle delle cascate di Mistretta Association, and the FIDAPA section of Mistretta.

Ho avuto il piacere di rappresentare il GMT™ Halaesa-Nebrodi alla Borsa internazionale del turismo, una delle più importanti manifestazioni legate al mondo del turismo che si è svolta a Milano-Rho dall'8 all'11 febbraio.
Con una platea di oltre mille espositori provenienti da tutto il mondo, la Bit si è accreditata progressivamente negli anni fino a diventare oggi un punto di riferimento per viaggiatori ed operatori, potendo essi usufruire di un vastissimo luogo dove scambiare informazioni, consolidare rapporti commerciali ed asplorare le tendenze che offrono i nuovi mercati turistici nazionali ed internazionali. Naturalmente la parte del leone l'ha fatta l'Italia rappresentata da ENIT e Ministero del Turismo che, insieme alle Regioni quasi tutte presenti, ha potuto mostrare il meglio di sè in termini di destinazioni ed eccellenze messe in vetrina dal Bel Paese.
A raccontare l'offerta turistica nazionale non poteva mancare certo la nostra bella Sicilia presente sia con operatori privati che con un importante stand organizzato dal Dipartimento Turismo della Regione Sicilia, impreziosito da una scenografica arena con grandi ledwall e superfici a specchio che ha accolto momenti istituzionali, talk e permormance artistiche.
Il nostro territorio era ben rappresentato dal Comune di Santo Stefano di Camastra in quanto parte delle Strade delle Ceramiche siciliane, un interessante percorso multitappa che tocca le principali città legate alla lavorazione delle terracotte. Altrettanto interessante è stato l'intervendo affidato al giornalista del Corriere della Sera Alessio Ribaudo, di Santo Stefano di Camastra, che nel raccontare la storia della ceramica stefanese ha sottolineato quanto siano forti e antichi il legami che hanno tenuto uniti, nei secoli,  i paesi del comprensorio, con particolare riferimento a Mistretta e Santo Stefano di Camastra. Un avvincente racconto dal quale partire per interpretare correttamente anche i tempi in cui viviamo.

In questo eccezionale quadro di promozione turistica ha fatto la sua comparsa anche il GMT™ Halaesa-Nebrodi che, pur non disponendo di alcuno spazio espositivo, si è mosso tra accreditati tour operator nazionali per raccontare loro del nostro progetto, della nostra visione e dei nostri operatori. In una parola abbiamo sottoposto loro una prima bozza-se pur in stato piuttosto avanzato-del nostro Catalogo di prodotti turistici raccogliendo da parte di tutti loro grande interesse. Insieme ad Andrea Succi e Katia Mastroeni nella qualità di Direttore tecnico di Aura Mundi abbiamo raccontato, col giusto mix di entusiasmo e professionalità, come un intero territorio ben organizzato e coordinato possa proporsi come autentica Destinazione turistica attraverso delle proposte di soggiorno strettamente legate all'autenticità dei luoghi, delle persone e e degli operatori coinvolti. Cogliere le tendenze verso le quali si muove il mercato turistico non può prescindere da un'attenta conoscenza della fabbrica del turismo, dei suoi meccanismi, delle figure chiave e delle metodologie da applicare ed in questo percorso la presenza di Katia è stata davvero preziosa: con lei e grazie a lei abbiamo avviato con diversi tour operator  interessanti interlocuzioni che avranno un seguito nelle prossime settimane dedicate ad approfondire i contatti stabiliti e alla divulgazione del nostro Catalogo per favorire la presenza, in un futuro davvero vicino, dei primi visitatori di Halaesa-Nebrodi. 

Il nostro progetto nasce e si sviluppa nell'Area interna Nebrodi, un territorio che accoglie paesi ricchi di storia, cultura e tradizioni, popolati da persone dal sapere antico, eredi di una cultura materiale e immateriale straordinari, tristemente falcidiati dallo spopolamento e dalla depressione sociale ed economica, ma che possono trovare un elemento di riscatto nella promozione turistica che, però, va interpretata come momento di aggregazione tra Comuni e tra comunità, attraverso una proposta condivisa, partecipata, ben strutturata e organizzata.
Percorso non semplice, lungo ma necessario, che richiede operatori, cittadini e amministratori illuminati.

Talvolta si può essere Gente di Halaesa-Nebrodi pur vivendo a oltre 1300 km di distanza. E' ciò che accade a tanti siciliani che, per svariati motivi, vivono fuori dal luogo di origine ed è esattamente ciò che avviene anche con Alessio Ribaudo, stefanese di nascita ma milanese di adozione, giornalista del Corriere della Sera.
Nonostante Alessio viva e lavori a Milano da svariato tempo, in realtà quel sottile filo rosso che lo collega alla sua Santo Stefano di Camastra (ma non solo, come vedremo più avanti) non si è mai spezzato anzi, nel corso degli anni, si è addirittura irrobustito, mantenedo così vivi i legami familiari, affettivi e di appartenenza, fatto-quest'ultimo- che si traduce anche nel non avere "assorbito" più di tanto la cadenza meneghina, condizione che, personalmente, apprezzo molto.

Alessio, il tuo biglietto Santo Stefano-Milano non è mai stato di sola andata. Quanto è forte il legame con la Sicilia?

Senza radici, gli alberi non crescono. Sono nato a Santo Stefano di Camastra. Qui sono nati mia madre, Angela Ciofalo, i miei nonni, i bisnonni e i miei avi fino ai quadrisavoli. Mio padre è di Mistretta, una terra che, almeno dal 1448, è stata patria dei Ribaldo — poi Ribbaudo e infine Ribaudo. Un cognome non è mai solo un cognome: è una storia, una traccia, un testimone passato di generazione in generazione.
A Mistretta, ogni sabato da bambino, la domanda rituale era sempre la stessa: “Ma tu a cu apperteni?”. Non era solo una curiosità; era il passaggio obbligato per essere riconosciuti, compresi. La risposta non era mai banale, non bastava dire il nome del padre. Solo quando dicevo: “U niputi ri ron Luciu ri S’Addiu”, il cerchio si chiudeva, l’identità trovava la sua chiave. A Milano, dove vivo da trent’anni, accade qualcosa di simile. Anche qui, in certi ambienti, si distingue tra i “Milanés de la lengua de Milan” e tutti gli altri.
Anche qui il cognome e il dialetto sono sigilli. Ma la verità è che il legame con la propria terra non si misura in chilometri, si misura in battiti.
I Nebrodi mi hanno visto crescere. Ho amato, riso, sognato in queste terre. Da qui sono partito, qui resta la mia anima. Qui c’è la terra che ha esaltato l’entusiasmo della mia giovinezza. Qui ho imparato a stare con i piedi piantati a terra e lo sguardo rivolto al mare, verso l’infinito che neanche la corona delle Eolie sbarra. Fra i miei 1.611 avi, ricostruiti documentalmente, non ci sono stati solo stefanesi e mistrettesi, ma anche militellesi (Faraci) e sanfratellani (Calderone e Tomasello). C’erano cristiani (Armao, Cannata, Smriglio, Scaduto) ed ebrei (Bartolotta, Giaconia, Giordano, Ortoleva).
Nobili e socialisti, appaltatori e artigiani, armatori e allevatori, imprenditori e agrimensori reali, anticlericali incalliti e alti prelati, sindaci e anarchici. Grandi ricchezze e grandi rovesci.
Insomma, c’era tutta la contraddizione dei Nebrodi. Le porto dentro: nel modo in cui guardo il mare, nei silenzi delle montagne, nella tenacia che mi accompagna ogni giorno.


La scrittura, oltre ad essere il tuo lavoro, è una passione profonda. Da dove nasce?

C’è un momento, nella vita di ciascuno, in cui la passione prende forma. Per me accadde in prima media, quando il mio mitico professore di italiano, Gaetano Gerbino, ci assegnò un compito in classe: scrivere un articolo immaginario. Il suo giudizio fu chiaro: “Si prevede un futuro al Corriere della Sera”. Era il 1986. Quell’estate segnò la mia vita.
Avevo appena compiuto dieci anni quando, per la prima volta, mi misero davanti a un mixer e a un microfono. L’editore, Beniamino Priolisi, mi spiegò con calma: “Con questo cursore abbassi la musica, con questo alzi la voce. Vai.” Dopo alcune prove, pronunciò una frase che non ho mai dimenticato: “Da oggi condurrai il tg dei ragazzi”. Era Radio Incontro.
E in quel momento non pensavo più al caldo infernale di quel locale angusto. Pensavo solo alle parole, a quel brivido di raccontare. Poco dopo passai anche al giornalismo televisivo e alla carta stampata: dal Giornale di Sicilia a Centonove, da Onda Tv ad Antenna del Mediterraneo, passando per Radio Stefanese e Tgs.
Avevo appena quindici anni quando seguii il mio primo duplice omicidio. Conoscevo bene le vittime: un compaesano che correva nei rally e il suo navigatore-meccanico. Non potevo girarmi dall’altra parte, non potevo tacere. Quello è stato l’inizio. Poi Mediaset on Line, Italpress, Il Giornale e infine il grande salto: il Corriere della Sera. Da vent’anni racconto il mondo con la consapevolezza che le parole hanno un peso. Le ho usate per raccontare di mafia, legalità, dissesto idrogeologico. La mia scrittura non è mai stata solo un mestiere. È sempre stata, prima di tutto, una forma di resistenza.

Hai scoperto storie dimenticate. Me ne racconti alcune?

Ci sono nomi che la storia perde. Liborio Ribaudo è uno di questi. Nato a Mistretta nel 1897, credeva in valori oggi rari: onore, dovere, patria.
A vent’anni comandava un plotone durante la Grande Guerra. L’Esercito gli conferì la Medaglia d’Argento al Valor Militare. Dopo la guerra, la vita lo portò in Libia. Era il 1923: la guerra coloniale, il sogno espansionista fascista. Liborio era un ufficiale del Secondo Battaglione Eritreo, sotto il comando di Graziani. Poi arrivò il 27 dicembre. Beni Ulid. Trecento italiani contro tremila ribelli. Liborio, alla testa dei suoi uomini, respinse l’assalto. Fu ferito gravemente. I suoi commilitoni si misero sugli attenti mentre lo riportavano indietro.
Con l’ultimo fiato, si alzò dalla barella e gridò: “Viva sempre l’Italia.” Un’altra Medaglia d’Argento al Valor Militare, ma il suo nome si è sbiadito nei vicoli di Mistretta. Un errore burocratico lo ha collocato a Gela. Ma lui era di Mistretta, e io sogno e ribadisco che il suo nome vada iscritto nel bel Monumento ai Caduti che mio nonno Lucio, con la sua arte, contribuì a erigere.
E poi c’è Maria Ciofalo, giovane partigiana e agente segreta britannica, una figura quasi dimenticata. Operava per lo Special Operations Executive. Una donna coraggiosa, che agiva dietro le linee nemiche, sabotava, spiava. Il mio lavoro è riportare alla luce queste vite e restituire loro il posto che meritano nella memoria collettiva.


Hai ricevuto premi importanti. Il Premio Pio La Torre e il titolo di Siciliano Lombardo dell’Anno 2023. Cosa significano per te?

Significano orgoglio, ma anche una vertigine. Vedere il mio nome accostato all’opera di santi civili come Pio La Torre e Salvatore Carnevale o a grandi magistrati come Antonino Caponnetto è un onore enorme. Questi riconoscimenti non sono solo premi; sono energia pura per continuare un lavoro che è fatica, che richiede dedizione costante. Non si scrive di mafia e legalità per diventare famosi, ma per dare voce a chi non ne ha. Questi premi mi ricordano che il giornalismo non è solo mestiere: è missione, è impegno civile, è responsabilità.

Il GMT™ Halaesa-Nebrodi. Cosa ne pensi?

La memoria di un luogo non sta solo nelle sue pietre o nei suoi documenti, ma in ciò che quelle pietre e quei documenti raccontano, e nel modo in cui noi scegliamo di ascoltarli. Halaesa-Nebrodi è un progetto ambizioso che parte dal presupposto che il passato non debba essere un’ancora che ci trattiene, ma un trampolino che ci proietta in avanti.
Questo significa riconoscere la storia, ma anche darle nuova vita, affinché continui a dialogare con il presente e con il futuro. Bisogna saper ascoltare questo territorio senza imporre, senza forzare.
Lasciare che le pietre, i sentieri, le montagne e il mare raccontino la loro storia. È in quel racconto che si trova il valore unico dei Nebrodi.
Questo progetto ha un potenziale straordinario, perché vuole mettere in luce non solo le bellezze naturali, ma anche la ricchezza enogastronomica, culturale e umana di questa terra.
Per farlo, però, serve qualcosa di più di una buona idea. Serve una sinergia vera tra istituzioni, realtà locali, giovani imprenditori e comunità, affinché il progetto lasci un segno duraturo.
Realtà locali, istituzioni, giovani imprenditori devono collaborare per dare continuità e sostenibilità a un progetto innovativo, ma anche rispettoso delle radici. E poi serve una narrazione potente. Spesso si ricordano i miei articoli sulle mafie, che opprimono e soffocano chi, con il sudore della fronte, porta avanti la propria azienda: gli onesti in Sicilia sono la stragrande maggioranza. Ma ce ne sono tanti altri che mi rendono orgoglioso perché hanno messo in risalto la bellezza dei Nebrodi e hanno convinto imprenditori del settore turistico a inserire quest’area nei loro percorsi.
I media devono essere parte di questo processo, perché far conoscere il valore di un luogo significa anche proteggerlo e preservarlo. Chi mette la testa sotto la sabbia, come uno struzzo, non fa il bene di questi scrigni. Il “niente vidi, niente sacciu” ha già causato danni incalcolabili per generazioni. È il peggior stereotipo e il boomerang mediatico più devastante che possa esistere. I negazionisti che si agitano, additano e sbraitano, con il marranzano in sottofondo, provocano nei turisti solo repulsione per la loro chiusura mentale verso la verità e il loro atteggiamento retrogrado.
Il ruolo dei media è essenziale: raccontare le storie di chi lavora, vive e ama questi luoghi. Perché far conoscere il valore di un territorio non significa solo promuoverlo: significa anche proteggerlo, custodirlo e consegnarlo intatto alle generazioni future. Raccontare un territorio significa raccontare la realtà, senza menzogne. Significa custodirlo. Significa proteggerlo. Solo così si potrà consegnarlo al futuro. Insieme: perché da soli si va veloci, ma tutti per uno si va lontano.
Raccontare un territorio, in fondo, è un atto di responsabilità e di amore. Non è solo una questione di marketing o turismo: è una questione di identità, di appartenenza, di rispetto per ciò che siamo stati e per ciò che possiamo diventare.
È questa, credo, la sfida più grande: trovare il modo di far convivere passato e futuro, tradizione e innovazione, in un equilibrio che non sacrifichi nulla, ma che valorizzi tutto.
Come un novello Ulisse, sogno che un giorno, quando chiuderò la mia stilografica, tornerò nella mia Itaca e la ritroverò non solo intatta, ma anche fiorita, rinnovata, arricchita da tutto ciò che avremo costruito.
Non una nostalgia di ciò che era, ma un’aspirazione a ciò che può diventare. Una casa non come l’ho lasciata, ma come ho sempre sperato che fosse.

1. Il 9 agosto di un anno fa ci lasciava Mario Portera, noto e apprezzato medico amastratino, per più di ventanni dirigente dell'Ospedale SS. Salvatore, legatissimo alla famiglia ma anche alle passioni di cui si nutriva. Mario, infatti, ha sempre avuto una grande attenzione per il sociale che esprimeva in svariati modi: indimenticabile la prima edizione della Dama vivente, fortemente voluta e organizzata da lui ed altri amici, frutto di una passione per il gioco della dama che lo portò a costituire, insieme ad altri appassionati, il Circolo della Dama "Tommaso Aversa" di Mistretta.
   Un'altra grande passione che Mario portava avanti e "coltivava" era quella per il buon cibo (era anche un cuoco appassionato) e , soprattutto, per l'olio d'oliva che coltivava nella sua azienda di famiglia.
   In uno degli ultimi incontri Mario mi raccontò, con grande entusiasmo, che era prossimo a ottenere un'importante attestazione: quella di Assaggiatore europero di Olio d'oliva, cosa che avvenne poche settimane dopo a Imperia, presso l'ONAOO.
   Lo stesso sguardo pieno di eccitazione  lo colsi in quello che poi si rivelò essere l'ultimo incontro: ci ritrovammo in Chiesa Madre, lui era insieme alla moglie Gabriella e, uscendo dalla Chiesa mi disse che, insieme, stavano portando a termine un progetto di grande spessore  a cui tenevano molto proprio relativo al Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli in cui eravamo. Ne fui felice e concordammo che, appena tutto fosse stato completato, con piacere lo avrei accolto e diffuso nel sito di Halaesa-Nebrodi.
   Poche settimane dopo, purtroppo, Mario ci lasciò ma non il lavoro per cui aveva faticato tanto e che lascerò raccontare a Gabriella Dongarrà che, gentilmente, ha inviato una lettera alla redazione.

Il sito nasce da un’idea dell’arciprete, Monsignore Michele Giordano che da più di 30 anni si adopera incessantemente nella nostra Comunità e che è stato l’artefice principale dell’elevazione della Chiesa a Santuario. L’arciprete ha pensato di coinvolgere in questo progetto me e mio marito sfruttando le nostre competenze sia  informatiche che di creazione e gestione sito internet. Da qualche  anno, infatti, abbiamo creato  e gestiamo un sito che si occupa di alimentazione, con particolare riguardo all’alimentazione infantile, https://www.pappablog.it/

Sia io che mio marito avevamo sposato l’idea con molto entusiasmo. Purtroppo le circostanze della vita mi hanno costretto a portare avanti questo progetto da sola. Io sto cercando di dare il massimo.
Oggi il sito è on line. La sua Mission è far conoscere il Santuario ai fedeli che vivono lontani da Mistretta ma anche agli amanti di opere d’arte perché il santuario è uno scrigno di opere d’arte di inestimabile valore e bellezza. Dopo la visita on line il passo successivo è una visita in presenza alla Chiesa e alla nostra ridente cittadina.

Volevo segnalare che il nostro Santuario è luogo di Pia visita per ottenere l’indulgenza giubilare. Sul sito potete trovare tutte le informazioni in merito.

Prossimo Step: stiamo lavorando alla creazione di QR code da sistemare lungo il percorso di visita del Santuario. Inquadrandoli con il cellulare il visitatore si collega a sezioni del sito e può scoprire cosi’ le opere d’arte che ha davanti. Una sorta di visita guidata del tutto gratuita che ognuno può gestire in base ai propri tempi e preferenze.

Sono graditi feedback che possono aiutarci a migliorare e a rendere il sito vivo e partecipato, cuore pulsante della comunità amastratina e non solo."

Le pagine Instagram-Facebook del GMT Halaesa-Nebrodi stanno crescendo sempre di più, segno di un continuo interesse verso il primo esempio di progetto di sviluppo turistico territoriale che mira a fare diventare la nostra area, i nostri Comuni, la nostra gente, Destinazione turistica. 

Parallelamente dati molto incoraggianti provengono dal sito halaesanebrodi.it, sia in termini di accesso che di distribuzione nazionale e internazionale. Mi piace sottolineare come tutti i dati non siano stati condizionati da campagne promozionali specifiche che sono comunque programmate ma siano frutto solamente di accessi spontanei alimentati dal passaparola e dalla qualità e quantità dei contenuti pubblicati.
Grazie ad uno scrupoloso lavoro di promozione degli operatori, degli avvenimenti di interesse turistico proposti dai comuni e dal risalto dato ai nostri “ambasciatori” rappresentati da persone che raccontano il territorio in Italia e nel mondo, il nostro sito attraverso i 35000 accessi registrati in questi pochi mesi è diventata la vetrina principale della vitalità di Halaesa-Nebrodi.

📌29 aprile 2024-Presentazione del sito e dei primi operatori a Castel di Tusa.
📌21 maggio 2024-Presentazione del progetto alle Proloco del territorio a Motta d’Affermo.
📌21 settembre 2024-Presentazione a Castel di Lucio del Piano d’azione ai Sindaci del territorio e, contestualmente, dei primi dati numerici e statistici provenienti dal sito halaesanebrodi.it.
In questi dieci mesi abbiamo avviato e sviluppato un percorso innovativo, entusiasmante, lungimirante ma anche complesso e pieno d’insidie.
D’altronde proporsi come Destinazione turistica non è cosa semplice: occorrono visione e condivisione, professionalità e perseveranza, fiducia e pazienza, umiltà e coraggio. E amore per il proprio territorio e la propria comunità.
Andrea Succi dice spesso che la Cultura dell’Ospitalità non coincide con il turismo, ma ne è il presupposto.
Ecco, allora, che diventa determinante per ciascuno di noi cambiare il paradigma di approccio al mondo del turismo, Operatore economico o Sindaco che sia.
Certo è che il nostro territorio, la nostra gente, i nostri beni materiali e immateriali, la nostra cultura meritano una chance di rigenerazione turistica e quindi economica attraverso una proposta che sia adeguata ai tempi che viviamo, che guardi ai mercati nazionali e internazionali, che sia professionalmente strutturata e altrettanto professionalmente governata.
Temi di cui da anni si parla e che adesso possiamo realizzare, ma dobbiamo farlo insieme.
La scommessa è sostituire la congiunzione avversativa “ma” con la più semplice e rassicurante congiunzione copulativa “e”.
Non è cosa facile né scontata.
Stessa sorte tocca all’avverbio “insieme”.

去って留まるか、去って戻るか。これは多くのシチリア移民が目的地に到着して以来直面した歴史的とも言えるジレンマです。我が国のさまざまな省庁、特に国防省、外務省、観光省、商務省とシチリア地域 - 生産活動局、地域文化局の間の強い直観から遺産とアイデンティティ、地域農業局、農村開発および地中海漁業局、家族・社会政策・労働局、神殿の谷考古学公園、カターニア市、UNPLI イタリアプロロコ全国協会、および USEF – ヴィラッジョ・イタリアアメリゴ・ヴェスプッチ練習船のワールドツアーのおかげで、さまざまな国のいくつかの港で、イタリアの優れたもの、特にシチリアの優れたものすべてを大きな力と情熱で結集しました。この文脈において、メイド・イン・シチリーは、ブック・オブ・ルーツという非常に野心的なプロジェクトを通じて、シチリアの誇りの象徴となり、世界中のすべてのシチリア人を支援するシチリアの文化と創造性の基準となる候補になります。最後に、イオ・コンプロ・シチリアーノ - メイド・イン・シチリア協会の創設者であるダヴィデ・モリチ氏とジョヴァンニ・カレア氏と一緒に進めているプロジェクトを通じて、高さ約4メートルの全周を石で固めたマジョリカテラコッタの木を作ります。

メイド・イン・シチリア・プロジェクトを歓迎した在ロサンゼルスイタリア総領事ラファエラ・ヴァレンティーニ氏の多大な熱意のおかげで、ロサンゼルス港に建てられたヴィラッジョ・イタリアで「根の木」を贈呈し、プロジェクトは大成功に終わりました。『カム・ホーム』と『神々のシンポジウム』マルコ・サバテリ・プロダクションによる 1つ目は、ユニークな物語のパフォーマンス、象徴的な招待状、そして世界中のイタリア移民に捧げられた祝典であり、彼らのルーツを思い出させます。イベントにはダンサー、歌手、俳優、アクロバットなど18人のパフォーマーが参加しました。彼らのパフォーマンスは、1921 年にニューヨークで起きたトライアングル シャツウエスト工場の悲劇を音楽で表現し、原点回帰への感情的な旅を表していました。

シチリア島はあなたの故郷ですが、世界中があなたの表現の地になりつつあります。あなたを海外に連れて行ってくれる他のプロジェクトはありますか？

1969 年にシチリア島のモッタ ダッフェルモで生まれ、彫刻と陶器のデザインおよび芸術的な陶器の装飾を専門としていました。私は自分の地域と、「チロ・ミケーレ・エスポジート」地域芸術高校で教えているサント・ステファノ・ディ・カマストラ（メイン州）の陶芸の伝統に深い愛着を持っています。私の作品はイタリア国内外で展示されています。さらに、私はシチリアの文化と、不完全さの禅の本質を表現する楽の技法に非常に近づき、熱心にこれを実践しました。これらすべてが私にとって表現豊かな地形となり、私を中国へと連れて行ってくれました。そして今日、練習船アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチの2023年から2025年のワールドツアーに続き、私はメイド・イン・シチリアで美しい冒険に参加しています。

あなたの陶器が直面しなければならなかった旅の間に、あなたはいくつかの不幸を経験しましたが、幸せな結末を迎えました。いったい何が起こったのでしょうか？

8月26日、東京のヴィラッジョ・イタリアで、私と日本の巨匠中嶋宏行とのコラボレーションによる芸術的なパフォーマンスが行われました。イタリアは日本を歓迎します。このイベントは、一見遠く離れているように見えますが、非常に似ている2つの国民と2つの国の間の協力を視覚的に表現することを目的として企画されました。 2000年前の文化のルーツと伝統を讃え、それらを未来を見据えて現在に投影する芸術的接触の瞬間。このイベントは、メイド・イン・シチリアが Enit と協力してプロデュースし、ダヴィデ・モリチ氏とジョヴァンニ・カレア氏がキュレーターを務めました。公演の機会に、東京のヴィラッジョ イタリアで陶器が展示されたことは、シチリアにとって非常に重要な分野に注目と価値を与える素晴らしい機会となりました。これはルーツについてだけでなく、私たちの土地の将来についても語ったシチリア地域生産活動評議会議員エディ・タマジョ氏の言葉でもありました。東京滞在中に、ベスプッチのプレート2枚と焦げ茶色のヘッドが誤って割れてしまいました。そこで、私たちはすぐに金継ぎの専門家である ジャカ・アヤ に連絡しました。彼女は、多大な礼儀と細心の注意を払って、2 枚のベスプッチプレートを修理するために、6 時間以上私たちを研究室に受け入れてくれました。この取り組みは、金継ぎの技術を通じて、壊れた磁器や芸術的な陶器をすべて金で修復し、それに注目に値する象徴的な価値を与える巨匠中嶋宏行が用いた比喩の物語から生まれました。ダークブラウンでも同様の作業を行いました。私、ダヴィデとジョバンニにとって、中嶋宏行との出会いは、まさにジャカ・アヤのような人々、彼ら自身の文化への愛と他文化への強い好奇心との出会いによって思い出深いものとなりました。

ここしばらくの間、シチリアの卓越性を世界に広めることを目的とした取り組みであるメイド・イン・シチリアとの実りあるコラボレーションが進行中です。この相乗効果からどのようなプロジェクトが生まれるのでしょうか？

私たちはメイド・イン・シチリアのチームとともに、海外に住みながらも故郷との強い関係を維持してきた多くのシチリア人によるルーツへの回帰であるトルナ・ア・カーサ・プロジェクトに熱意を持って取り組んでいます。エキサイティングなプロジェクトの発展の中で、パレルモに建設されるメイド・イン・シチリア博物館の誕生が予見されています。
